CARPET GUIDE / UPDATED OCTOBER 5, 2026
Carpet traffic lanes, stairs and room-by-room estimates
Dark walk paths and stair edges are common reasons to request carpet cleaning. They can contain removable soil, oily residue and tracked-in material, but appearance can also reflect crushed pile, abrasion or color loss. A good estimate separates the amount of work from the condition of the fiber.

Soil and wear are not the same
Cleaning can remove soil that changes the color of the pile. It cannot rebuild fiber that has been abraded or permanently flattened. The technician looks at traffic direction, texture, age and how the area responds to pre-inspection before discussing the likely result.
Why stairs are scoped separately
Stairs have more edges, turns and concentrated foot contact than an open room. Treads, risers, landings and exposed sides may all be different surfaces. Count the steps and send a full staircase photo so the estimate includes the parts you expect to be cleaned.
What counts as a room
Open plans, closets, hallways and combined living areas vary widely. Approximate measurements or a quick video are more useful than a room label alone. Mention furniture coverage and whether only exposed carpet or the area under movable items is part of the request.
Setting expectations before extraction
Point out paint, adhesive, rust, filtration lines, pet accidents and old spot treatments. Each condition can require a separate test. HD confirms the scope and price before work, then explains visible limitations rather than using a universal stain promise.
ESTIMATE CHECKLIST
What to send HD
- Count rooms, halls, landings and steps
- Measure unusually large or open areas
- Photograph the darkest lanes and stair edges
- Mention stains, pets and previous products
COMMON QUESTIONS
Before you book
Will dark traffic lanes disappear?
They may improve significantly when darkening is caused by removable soil. Wear, crushing or color loss can remain after the carpet is clean.
Are stairs included with a room?
They should be listed separately so the estimate reflects the number of steps, landings and surfaces requested.
How long does cleaned carpet take to dry?
HD lists a typical four-to-eight-hour range, with humidity, airflow, pile and treatment level affecting the actual time.
